Oobleck & Fish

Today we enjoyed two Dr. Suess books -- Bartholomew and the Oobleck and One Fish, Two Fish.

For Bartholomew and the Oobleck we read the story together. Holly did a small book review of the story, colored a page of the King of Didd, she built a castle out of blocks, we prepared for a science experiment in which she predicted what will happen, we enjoyed Oobleck and then Holly wrote on what did happen with a picture. She enjoyed the Oobleck so much that we did it again that evening with Dad after reading the book for a second time.

Oobleck is supposed to be one part corn starch to one part water... however, this recipe never works well for us. We do about double the amount of corn starch - but I like a thicker goo. It is a lot more fun to work with when it is thicker. Of course, we added a tad of green food coloring to create 'Oobleck'. Such a fun sensory experience!

Later in the day we enjoyed One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish - this is a favorite of mine. After the story Holly did a book review, did a fish lacing project, she watched a video on Brain Pop on Tallying and graphing (her first introduction to tally marks) and then did two different projects with rainbow goldfish crackers - one with tally marks and one as a bar graph.

Holly then finished the day with a fish bowl art project in which she painted with colored corn syrup to create the water in a fish bowl, she designed a few fish to add with sea weed and rocks. After her project was complete you cover it with saran wrap which gives a very realistic water look - it is neat!
